Vermiculite is a natural mineral that is expanded and distributed by Nordia in two grain types, Fine & Medium, depending on the needs and requirements of the producer. It is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral, which belongs in the group of clays and specifically in crystalline clays with lamellar structure. Its characteristic is that it contains trapped water between the layers of its leaflets. The interlayered water evaporates abruptly at a temperature of 900°C, resulting in the swelling of the mineral up to 30 times compared to its original volume. The swelling converts the fine flakes of the ore into lightweight, porous granules that resemble an accordion and contain numerous layers of air.

Vermiculite is widely used in the production of seedlings due to its excellent physicochemical and mechanical properties, in order to improve seed germination, increase nursery production and robustness of the plants produced. Every plant, in any crop, needs good aeration and proper moisture in its roots and of course the right nutrients in order to grow properly. The presence of vermiculite in the cultivation substrate improves all three of these parameters, offering significant help and solutions to seed germination issues, nutrition and plant growth. Vermiculite absorption sites contain calcium, magnesium and significant amounts of potassium.
Vermiculite is indicated for use in seedling production.
